CENTER FOR BUSINESS ENGLISH
In September 2010, Yemen College for Middle Eastern Studies (YCMES) opened the Center for Business English (CBE). Through our accredited diploma we equip Yemeni professionals with the English language skills required in the business, governmental, and non-profit world. Using the Oxford University Press Business Result series, which has been developed in affiliation with the Cranfield School of Management, we teach Business English, from Elementary through to Advanced levels. The CBE boasts highly qualified and experienced instructors who are all native speakers of English, provides computer access for each student, and limits classes to twelve students.
Our course represents a solid, affordable investment, accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education, available only at the YCMES. We believe that the world-class learning experience provided here at the CBE will broaden students’ knowledge, enhance their awareness of International Business culture and put them a step closer to mastering their professions. The students will also have the opportunity to study with others of a similar professional and management background, due to our admissions policy, which requires either a university degree, or five years of professional experience.
Courses Available
Business English Evening courses
The course places particular emphasis on writing, presentation and team skills which are vital for the professional world. In addition to course book material, students are required to complete regular writing assignments, presentations and group projects. Furthermore, the course focuses on developing computer skills, in English, with email, online and CD-based assignments.
The program in Business English leads to:
- A Diploma in Business English that is accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education.
- All students are also required to take the internationally recognised TOIEC.
Students take a specially designed placement test, to determine their English level and are subsequently placed in one of the following levels: Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, Advanced 1, Advanced 2 (optional, 75 hours: 50 hours business writing, 25 hours TOEIC preparation).
In each ten week term students will cover one level, which comprises: Business Result textbook and additional materials specially developed by the teacher. In each term students will have one hundred hours of teaching, divided into ten hours per week. Classes are held after 4pm, with 2 hours of teaching on Saturday and 4 hours on two other days.

Intensive Program
From 20th January to 24th February 2011, the CBE ran the Professional English Program for the Groundwater & Soil Conservation Project, Ministry of Agriculture & Irrigation.
The Professional English Program was a 135 hour program delivered over five weeks, five days a week. The students were taught general English, which was supplemented by material from American English File (Oxford University Press), which suited the students’ needs better than the Business Result course book. The first day of the course was dedicated to placement testing and induction to the program. Students were accommodated at the YCMES.
The CBE is able to cater to the special training needs of your company. For more details email cberegistrar@ycmes.org.
