YCMES Partnerships and Affiliations

National Council on U.S. - Arab Relations - In addition to being an official sponsor of the National Council on U.S. - Arab Relations (NCUSAR), the YCMES is proud of its partnership for offering students study abroad opportunities in Yemen.  The NCUSAR is the main American office for the YCMES, and the two institutions collaborate on numerous educational ventures aimed at improving relations between the U.S. and the Arab world.  The YCMES has administered all of the National Council’s Congressional staff as well as faculty and student study abroad programs in Yemen for the past decade and a half. To date, more than 100 university faculty, students, and Congressional staff organized and escorted by the Council have participated in these programs. The NCUSAR is also the sponsor of Model Arab League and the Joseph J. Malone Fellowship in Arab and Islamic Studies. Yemen-America Language Institute - The YCMES and YALI are pleased to announce their partnership for student exchange.  The two institutes are developing programs aimed at introducing Yemeni and international students, with the intention of producing friendships. Projects include language buddies, conversational hours, shared cultural activities and trips, Arabic students teaching English, and other programs to foster cross-cultural understandings. Founded by the United States Embassy in Sana’a, YALI now celebrates its 32nd anniversary as the largest and most respected English language institute in Yemen. Backed by the United States Government and the international non-profit organization, AMIDEAST, YALI is part of the mission to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation between Americans and the peoples of the Middle East and North Africa. As a testament to this end, over a hundred thousand students have studied at YALI and consider it their second home.

American Institute for Yemeni Studies (AIYS)- The YCMES works closely with AIYS, the CAORC branch in Yemen, on language programs and other educational activities in Yemen.  Past joint programs have included the Critical Language Scholarship and co-sponsoring Tim Macintosh-Smith for an open lecture on Ibn Battutah's travels in Yemen.

Duke Islamic Studies Center - Duke University - The YCMES hosted the DukeEngage Yemen program, arranged through the Duke Islamic Studies Center (DISC), in the Summer of 2007, and has plans to further programming in the future.  Duke students were placed by the YCMES in local organizations for internships in areas such as human rights and democracy issues while taking intensive Arabic courses at the YLC. American University - The American University is a study abroad partner of the YCMES for summer Arabic study.  The two institutions have signed a five year memorandum of agreement in 2007, including transfer of credit for AU students attending Arabic language courses at the Yemen Language Center.  Click here for AU Abroad's page on Summer Arabic Language Immersion in Yemen.

Portland State University - PSU and the YCMES have signed a five year memorandum of agreement for academic semester and summer study abroad.  Starting in 2008, PSU students will have the opportunity to study abroad in Yemen, with transfer of credit, under this new agreement.  Click here to visit the Education Abroad website at PSU.

DePaul University - The YLC/YCMES is a study abroad partner with DePaul University as a summer destination for DePaul students to study Arabic.  This partnership allows DePaul students for full transfer of credit after studying at in YLC's Arabic Language Program.  Click here for DePaul's Summer Intensive Arabic Programs site.

George Mason University - The YCMES works closely with GMU and has developed an annual January short-term program for intensive Arabic in Sana'a, Yemen.  A group of students are accompanied by a GMU faculty member for a tailored three week program, encompassing Arabic language, culture, immersion, and site visits throughout Yemen.  Click here for the Winter 2008 Program.

Universidad de Granada - The YLC/YCMES hosts annually Spanish students for semester-long intensive Arabic study with a scholarship from the University of Granada.  Through a formal agreement between YLC/YCMES and UGR, qualified students are awarded with a scholarship for tuition, room, and board at the YCMES for a semester (three YLC 5-week terms).  Click here for a list of all UGR's exchange programs in the Arab World.

Università per Stranieri di Siena - The YCMES and University of Siena (Italy) have signed a formal agreement for inter-university co-operation and exchange programs.  The goal of the agreement is to promote educational projects aimed at improving cross-cultural understandings.

Columbia University - The Office of Global Programs at Columbia lists the YCMES as a Study Abroad Program in the Middle East and for Arabic language.

Harvard University - The Special Summer Arabic Language Program at the Yemen Language Center, under the Yemen College of Middle Eastern Studies, is an approved program for summer study by the Office of International Programs at Harvard University.  Click here to see a list of their approved summer programs in the Middle East.

City University of New York (CUNY) - The Middle East and Middle Eastern American Center (MEMEAC) at the Graduate Center at CUNY lists the YCMES as a study abroad program.

Indiana University - The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures recommends the YLC summer language program at the YCMES for its students.  It is listed among other summer programs in which the they "strongly encourage our NELC students to take advantage."  Click here to see a full list of recommended summer Arabic programs.

Critical Language Scholarships - The YLC & YCMES hosted the Critical Language Scholarship program in the summers of 2006 and 2007, which is sponsored by the American Institute for Yemeni Studies, the Council for American Overseas Research Centers, and funded through the U.S. Department of State.

 

The Democracy School - The YCMES cooperates with the Democracy School through internship placements and cross-cultural dialogue programs between Yemeni and International students. The main objective of the Democracy School, a licensed NGO,  is to raise awareness in the community about the concepts and principles of Human Rights and Democracy Rights. Since its founding in 2002, the Democracy School has worked on many initiatives to involve youth in government and elections, such as starting and maintaining the Youth Parliament in Yemen.

 

Yemenia Airlines - The YCMES has a formal agreement with Yemenia offering its students with discounted airfare from cities such as New York, Boston, Washington DC, Paris, London, Frankfurt, and Rome.  The YCMES exclusively uses Yemenia for official travel in exchange for flexible and cheaper airfare that is passed onto students.
