Mr. Abdul Kareem Alaug

Abdul Kareem Alaug is a Yemeni sociologist currently engaged in collaborative research with U.S. anthropologist Tom Stevenson on sports clubs and their connections to Yemeni state ideologies. He studied anthropology at the post-graduate level at Brown University, before deciding to pursue gender studies at Tilburg University in the Netherlands where he is completing his PhD. The subject of his thesis is a historical and sociological analysis of feminist movements in Yemen over the past fifty years. Mr. Alaug teaches in the Sociology Department at the University of Sana’a and has been active in the field of human rights in Yemen and the Arab world more generally, working for the Ministry of Human Rights, the World Bank and other organizations.
