June, 2008:
The administrative offices move into the new
college building. The college building is
still under construction, set to have its opening in
July 2008. Construction is currently working
to finish the 5th story of this new addition to the
The YLC opens
its doors to the annual Intensive Summer Arabic
Language Program for University Students. The
YLC greets 71 language students for its first summer
term. With all of the new renovations at the
YCMES/YLC, the academic and administrative staff is
happy to welcome these new students into its
programming.
May, 2008:
The YCMES hires new staff members to fill its
administrative team. We are happy to welcome
Mr. Ahmed Nagi, Administrative Manager; Mr. Stewart
Pierce-Gardner, Special Programs Coordinator, and
Mr. Samuel Yemington, Administrative Assistant.
The YLC Program Officer also changed hands and is
now under Mrs. Jessica Rowan, a former senior staff
member.
April,
2008: The YCMES releases a new statement on
security after recent attacks targeting the U.S.
Embassy and a foreign housing unit in Sana'a.

The YCMES & YLC invite
students to connect with fellow classmates through
Facebook. Old students can find lost friends
from Yemen or new students can meet and greet with
new and past students to ask questions about their

2008 YCMES Newsletter is available online.
The YCMES has
extended its application deadline and will continue
to accept applications for its fall 2008 semester.
The priority deadline is March 31, but applicants
will be considered afterwards on a rolling basis
until the program is filled.

February,
2008: The YCMES and
Yemen-America Language Institute are pleased to
announce their plans to develop an institutional
partnership. Co-operational programs
strive to form
friendships among international students of the
YCMES and Yemeni students of YALI. Projects
include language buddies, conversational hours,
shared cultural activities and trips, Arabic
students teaching English, and other programs to
foster cross-cultural understandings. This new
partnership makes sense; it will connect the two
oldest, largest, and most respected language
institutes of Yemen in the Arabic and English
languages.

The YCMES is

The YCMES opens the Research Center, with
three academics currently conducting research through

New
improvements to the YCMES services have been
implemented, including better coordination between
culture events and the language program, a new cook
for more meal choices and healthier quality of food,
and more activities for students to partake in.
The YCMES
announces new faculty member,
Dr. Ahmed
Saif, Political Scientist who received his PhD
from the University of Exeter. He joins the
team of very well respected academics to teach at
the YCMES.

The YCMES
announces its Associate Dean for the Program in
Contemporary Middle Eastern Studies. Mr. Abdul
Karim Alaug, MA, currently lectures in the
Department of Sociology, Sana'a University.
Mr. Alaug was a graduate student at Brown University
and is a PhD candidate in the Netherlands. The
YCMES is happy to welcome Alaug to its team, who
will start August 2008.
The YCMES is
proud to start a Calendar of Events for the city of
Sana'a. This initiative will compile events
from different organizations in Sana'a for students
and community members to refer to in one,
easy-to-access calendar.

December,
2007: The YCMES had another successful
educational tour and has now met over 80
universities. To date, programming and/or
agreements have been coordinated with American
University, DePaul University, George Mason
University, and Duke University, with more in the
works.
The YCMES is also happy to announce its
first four visiting professors for 2008-2009: Dr.
miriam cooke, Arabic Literature and Women's Studies,
Duke University; Dr. Bruce Lawrence, Islamic
Studies, Duke University; Dr. Jon Mandaville, Modern
Middle Eastern History, Portland State University;
and Dr. Nancy Um, Islamic Art and Architectural
History, Binghamton University SUNY.
The complete list of visiting professors and class
schedules is expected to be announced in the near
future.
October -
November 2007: The YCMES will be
undertaking another educational tour to the
following areas: Toronto, Michigan, North Carolina,
Washington, D.C., New York City, New Jersey, Upstate
New York, New Hampshire, and Montreal. The
YCMES will be exhibiting at the
Arab-U.S. Policymakers
Conference on 25 & 26 October, and at the
Annual
MESA Conference in Montreal
on 17-20 November. Come see us at our booths,
or inquire with your university to see if we will be
visiting.
October 2007: A new addition
was added to the YCMES campus. This new site
will contain the main administration and academic
offices, cafeteria, library, classrooms, and lecture
hall. Construction began on the site in
October 2007. This new site, the largest owned
by the college, will open for students in May 2008.
June 2007: The Yemen Language Center
is now housed in the Yemen College of Middle Eastern
Studies. The college is accredited by the Yemeni
Ministry of Higher Education, making it the first
and only accredited Arabic language program for
foreigners in Republic of Yemen. The YCMES will
open completely for students in the fall of 2008.
The YCMES has already begun college programming for
George Mason University and Duke University, and
plans to expand these programs to other interested
colleges. Please see the

details on these programs.
July 2007:
New staffing at the YCMES
has added greatly to our services. In addition to
our teaching staff (almost 20 fulltime, 30 for
summer terms) and administration/services team
(almost 30), we have six foreign staff to assist in
making the transition from the West to Yemen for our
students, and our own transition from a language
center to a college.
June 2007:
Dr. Peter Abboud & Aman Attieh spent a week
evaluating the YLC's language program, providing
feedback to administrators, presenting workshops on
Arabic pedagogy and teaching styles, and observing
the YLC Arabic Language Program.
June 2007:
The YCMES and National Council on U.S.- Arab
Relations announces its partnership in educational
ventures aimed at improving cross-cultural
understandings. The NCUSAR is the YCMES main
office in America.
November
2006 - February 2007: The YCMES
traveled to over 70 American and European
universities to promote the language program and new
college programs. Check with your Study Abroad
Office or Middle Eastern Studies/Arabic Departments
to see if YCMES has or will be visiting your campus
soon and obtain first-hand information from them.
Spring 2006: The YCMES installed an ADSL
line can now provide
24 hour high-speed internet access. Wireless technology provides
internet access in rooms and in the mafraj of our
main building and guest house for those with laptop
computers. A computer technician is employed at the
college to assist with any technology problems.
Plans are to make the whole campus wireless.
