This site is run by the Yemen College of Middle Eastern Studies to provide Sana'a residents with an up-to-date listing of  concerts, art exhibits, lectures, and other cultural events happening around town*.  If your institution is hosting an event and would like to advertise it here, please contact ycmes@ycmes.org with a complete listing of the event, including location, start time, and short description of the event.  We will make every effort to update the calendar as soon as we receive a posting.

July 13, 2008    7:30pm    German House Sana'a

Lecture / German-Arabic: "The Western Divan of the Eastern Poet. A Hymn to Johann Wolfgang Goethe"

Bilingual reading with Mohamed Mansur and Jens Winter on the mosaic-like panorama of a multitude of episodes and incidents major and minor, plus anecdotes on the way to the first German Unity, rendered with a bunch of humor, poetical sensitivity, clever observation and wit. The reading will be in German and Arabic.

Dr. Emilia Nagy, intercultural trainer from Vienna, shows in this interactive seminar how latest insights of brain research and psychology can be used for educational purposes.

Exhibition "The Unfinished Paintings" Salwa Aleryani

The exhibition's title "The Unfinished Paintings" refers to the source of inspiration which can be communicated through an unfinished work of art; its idea-, emotion- and thought-provoking potential in its early stages of creative process.

Artist Salwa Aleryani, born in 1982, studied graphic design in Amman. The DAAD-scholarship candidate participated in several art projects and exhibitions.

Lecture/ in English: Marianus Hundhammer: Destination and Destiny. The Pilgrimage to Qabr Nabiallah Hud in Hadramaut.
The Grave of the Prophet Hud, situated in the very East of Wadi Hadramaut, is the ultimate destination of an annual pilgrimage. Rich in local religious
manners and customs it represents a unique example of Yemeni culture. German Researcher Marianus Hundhammer, who had the great opportunity to
take part in one of the biggest group of pilgrims, presents first results of his field study.

Reading/ in English: Kyle Foster:” The Arabian Notes”
Author Kyle Foster gives samples from his book “ The Arabian Notes” in a “Reading in progress”. Ahmed Rassas is leaving the Yemeni countryside in order to lift his family’s secret: his father was a German soldier who fled to Yemen in the last days of the Second World War. The author will enlighten the audience with the whereabouts of the protagonist, as well as his own inspiration.

Laura Feldman, Concert Pianist and Dr. Mohammad Khalifa , specialist in poetry recital, present a fine selection of Arabian poems to the tunes of the piano– Orient and Occident unite in music and poetry.
